PRACTICAL CONSTRUCTION GUIDANCE

Prepare for final construction cleaning: from site condition to handover

Good final construction cleaning starts before the cleaning visit. Site management and the cleaning team need the same picture: which areas are finished, which work is continuing and what result is expected? Coordinating these details helps avoid unnecessary repeat visits and misunderstandings at handover.

Section 01

1. Separate completed areas from outstanding work

Make a room or floor list showing the actual construction stage. One overall completion date is not enough if some rooms still need painting or fittings. Identify the areas that can be released for cleaning and who can confirm that release.

Discuss later dusty work and planned deliveries. If these happen after cleaning, agree how any repeat cleaning will be handled. For phased handover, give each area its own cleaning window and a named contact who can communicate changes before the team arrives.

Section 02

2. Describe materials and remaining residues

List floor finishes, glazing, coatings, doors and fittings. New surfaces may have specific care instructions, so share available manufacturer information during planning. Identify protective films, labels and adhesive residues individually instead of assuming that every residue can be removed as standard.

Record known scratches, damaged joints or other existing damage before work starts. Unknown residues and suspected hazardous materials require specialist assessment first; they are not an ordinary cleaning task. Photos should show relevant surfaces without people, access codes or confidential project information.

Section 03

3. Agree access and working conditions

Confirm vehicle access, unloading, lifts, water, power and permitted working hours. The site contact should be able to show released routes and rooms. Arrange keys and special entry rules directly with the responsible person; do not put access credentials in a general enquiry.

Agree what will be cleared beforehand and what will stay on site. Construction waste, stored materials and movable furnishings need clearly assigned responsibilities. Collecting waste, transporting it away and disposing of it are separate tasks and must be agreed where required.

Section 04

4. Agree a result that can be checked

Describe the result through specific surfaces and tasks. Terms such as “ready to move in” do not replace a scope of work. Keep included tasks, exclusions and required approvals together so everyone has the same basis for the final visual inspection.

Name the person who will inspect the cleaned areas and record outstanding points. Distinguish cleaning issues from new dirt and construction defects. Cleaning supports handover, but it does not replace technical inspection or acceptance of the building works.
